We also replaced the client’s aging siding with a modern fiber-cement board and a cedar accent on the bay window. The initial intention for this roving structure is for it to be responsive to site, place-based and ecologically-centered art practices and community. lichen aims to be a decentralized arts creation, programming, and gathering space conceived as an adaptable multi-purpose entity, much like its namesake lichen. &nbsp; &nbsp; Its potential lies in its responsiveness to transform: be that into an infoshop, library, free school, studio space, gallery, kitchen, critical reading group, skill-share venu, programming space, living space, incubator, laboratory, organizing space, DIY healthcare space, dark room, listening space, harm reduction space...but it is always, already a site for critical creative response. &nbsp; &nbsp; lichen is designed simply in order to be responsive to many differing needs as a solar-powered, modular, adaptable structure on wheels. In imagining how the space will respond to our current needs and shared contexts, lichen, like its namesake, embraces the slowness, and dormancy that the current surrounding environment encourages. from Art Gallery of Greater Victoria’s magazine (by Alexis Hogan) --- &nbsp; &nbsp; In terms of the actual structure, we decided on a cedar and galvanized metal finish - something that would survive the wet Pacific Northwest climate and rough travel on backcountry forestry roads. It is equipped with two solar panels and a bank of deep cycle batteries. The interior is modular with birch paneling, a very basic composting toilet (bucket + sawdust), and an equally simple sink (bucket + foot pump). &nbsp; I was approached by AVI Health and Community Services, partnered with SOLID Outreach Society, to renovate a 1918 downtown storefront into a safe supply center / supervised consumption site.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; The project is funded by Health Canada and called the SaferVic initiative, which “follows a comprehensive model and employs a team of physicians, nurses, outreach workers, and systems navigators who currently work with 89 unsheltered people in Victoria to connect them to prescription medication and other supports.” &nbsp; &nbsp; I was brought on as the general contractor and oversaw the transformation of the space, from an old pizza shop into a front waiting room, supervised consumption area, two doctor’s offices, and a secure storage area for prescription medicines.&nbsp; They were completely funded by over $10,000 in community donations. &nbsp; &nbsp; When we first installed them in the park, the city told us we didn’t have the proper permits (despite not having any alternative hygiene facilities) and shut off our water. So we built an off-grid system with solar panels, marine battery, cistern, and an RV pump. We were able to provide hot showers to the community for 5 days before the city impounded the whole setup. &nbsp; &nbsp;I wrote a short essay about the history of the park, and my experience with the unhoused community - check it out here. Shortly after starting my business, my aunt sent me a picture of my great-great grandfather George Fletcher Turney and his construction crew in front of the Brighton Public School (circa 1914). He was a window maker by trade, and worked for most of his life as a general contractor in Northumberland County, Ontario. &nbsp; &nbsp; It was my grandfather, David Turney, who sparked my interest in carpentry. He was a civil engineer, and general contractor. He was also an early pioneer in environmentally conscious building and helped found a sustainable building design and construction program at Fleming College in early 2000s. The cabin is built on an 18’ foot trailer, and is well insulated with a very large wood stove for the northern winters. &nbsp; &nbsp; It will serve as housing for Indigneous folks who are using their traditional territories to live, hunt, raise family, and gather medicines.
